Tambrey’s integrated growth narrative, with a future focus

Tambrey Primary School, located near Karratha in Western Australia, is named after one of the district’s earliest cattle stations. The school serves the suburbs of Tambrey, Jingari, Nickol, and Nickol West, and caters to approximately 700 students from diverse social and cultural backgrounds. With an Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage (ICSEA) of 921, the school has a student population comprising 32% Indigenous and 27% EALD learners. Since beginning its Essential Assessment journey in mid-2023, Tambrey has entered its second year of embedding consistent, whole-school practices around assessment and data-informed instruction. Teachers across Years 2–6 administered the Number – General All pre-assessment, aligned to the Australian Curriculum v9.0, establishing shared expectations and a consistent approach to tracking student progress.

Over the past twelve months, Tambrey’s staff and students have worked with extraordinary focus and determination. In a school situated within the bottom 10 per cent ICSEA band, the team committed to a simple but powerful approach: identify where students are at, work alongside them, and keep collective eyes on the prize. This commitment has created a genuine community of assessment where everyone knows where each student is at, what they have to learn, and how to celebrate success while striving for new goals.

Central to the school’s culture is a shared belief that learning is not about exceeding; it’s about moving forward. Every gain is valued, every improvement is recognised, and every student understands that progress is the true measure of success. This mindset has reshaped expectations and strengthened a deep sense of collective purpose across classrooms.

This belief is clearly reflected in the school’s growth data. In Number, students in Years 3 and 4 achieved a full twelve months of growth, and Year 6 demonstrated significant acceleration with 1.5 years of progress in a single cycle. Steady gains across Year 1, Year 2, and Year 5 (all achieving 0.5 years) demonstrate the impact of targeted instruction, consistent routines, and meaningful goal-setting.

In Measurement, growth has been consistently positive from Years 2–6, ranging from 0.5 to 1 year. These outcomes point to deliberate teaching strategies, responsive adjustment, and a clear understanding of what students already know and what they still need to learn.

For a community navigating significant socio-educational challenges, these results represent far more than data points. They reflect a year of intentional teaching, high expectations, and unwavering belief in every learner. Students are not just meeting and exceeding their goals; they are moving forward every day, supported by educators who have created a culture of clarity, celebration, and continuous improvement.

As the school looks towards 2026, there is a renewed sense of optimism. There are strong foundations now in place, a clear commitment to purposeful assessment, and a community united around progress. The growth achieved is not a final destination—it’s a launch pad for even greater success in the years to come.

Students demonstrated steady to accelerated progress across the Number strand, with total growth ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 years across the year levels. (1.0 = Expected growth)

Growth in the Measurement strand was consistently positive, with total progress across the year levels ranging from 0.5 to 1 year. (1.0 = Expected growth)
