From one teacher’s vision, a transformative assessment model for primary education.
Essential Assessment was founded in 2015 by Andrew Spitty, a secondary school Mathematics teacher living in regional Victoria.
Andrew could see a need for teachers to access robust curriculum-aligned assessment and learning materials combined with precise, reliable assessment data. By offering these things to schools, he believed he could genuinely impact student learning and achievement – at an individual, class and whole school level.
So, he began by developing Victorian curriculum-aligned worksheets and assessments in the evenings and weekends. It wasn’t long before Andrew’s brother, Troy, joined the cause to help move some of these resources online and build the assessment capabilities Andrew envisioned.
From humble beginnings, Andrew’s ideas quickly became Essential Assessment.
Now, Australia’s leading Mathematics and English primary assessment product, Essential Assessment, is used by over 2900 schools nationwide and supports teaching and learning using the NSW Syllabus, the Victorian Curriculum, and the Australian Curriculum.
In early 2023, Essential Assessment was acquired by Education Perfect (EP), making EP the largest EdTech platform in Australia. Although the company has grown, the majority of our team remains based in Melbourne, and our assessment and learning materials continue to be created in alignment with the original vision and mission of the Spitty brothers.
